In this personal memoir, Jeri Shute recounts tales from a bygone era, beginning on the Kansas prairie, journeying across the world, raising five children, and navigating the ever-shifting landscape of a woman's life in changing times. Through her memories, we catch a glimpse of the past—of colorful relatives and neighbors forging their paths in the early 1900s, of life on a family farm filled with the joys, challenges, and adventures unique to that time. These stories offer a window into the resilience, warmth, and spirit of a remarkable woman and the world she has witnessed.
The result of a decade of work, Memories of a Good Life includes stories from Shute’s life, including her experience raising children, her marriage of sixty years, and the powerful shifts in the world she explored. Shute’s book is available in the National Willa Cather Center bookstore, and she is no stranger to the Center. She's been a generous supporter of the Willa Cather Foundation for more than two decades—donating her time and talents as a volunteer, embroidering tea towels for our visitors to purchase, and generously sponsoring children’s programming in the Red Cloud Opera House.
