This print of a plowing scene is from an illustration for My Ántonia. Willa Cather commissioned Wladyslaw T. Benda (1873-1948) to create the now iconic pen-and-ink drawings, eight of which were published in the novel when it was released in 1918.
Benda was a painter, illustrator, and costume designer from Poland. Six of these eight are held in the Willa Cather Foundation Special Collections and Archives at the National Willa Cather Center, some bearing personal inscriptions from Cather to her friends.
In 2012, Jim and Angela Southwick donated four of the original Benda illustrations to the Willa Cather Foundation. These illustrations joined two additional Benda originals already in the Foundation's collection.
Matted and suitable for framing.
